This British army inspired military jacket offers a rugged worn-in style with elite functionality.
J Barbour & Sons Ltd out of England are 5th generation tailors of some of the finest high quality jackets and clothing. Since it was founded in 1824 Barbour has been making rugged and durable jackets for over 120 years.
Barbour originally became famous for making waterproof, reliable and hardworking jackets for English sailors and soldiers.
Today, Barbour jackets are now popping up in America thanks to iconic actor Steve Maqueen and more recently; Daniel Craig in the last few James Bond films.
The inspiration behind the Sapper jacket is the World War 2 era Royal Engineers Corps of the British army. Referred to as “Sappers” – for sapping the enemy’s strength – these guys were responsible for things like blowing up enemy bridges and taking out artillery guns with explosives. Sappers would often find themselves behind enemy lines and needed a highly functional jacket to with extra pockets to carry explosives, ammo, food and gear.
Barbour took a military jacket and added a formal twist. It has 7 pockets and a stow-away rain hood that zips into the jacket and can easily unzip if you’re caught in the rain. For the Sapper, Barbour has used a lighter weight 6oz “Sylkoil” waxed cotton instead of the heavier tradition waxed cotton used in many of their jackets.
The result is a jacket that lighter and more flexible but still is heavily rain resistant and durable. If, god forbid, you experienced some sort of natural disaster scenario, this would probably be the jacket you took with you.
This is a jacket that gets better with age, You’ll want to re-wax it every 3-4 years to maintain it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. This is a jacket that will last over a decade easily.
We tested this jacket under heavy rainfall and it stands up extremely well. The 7 pockets area a huge asset. I love this jacket if I am in any kind of long trip, light back-packing or road trip scenario.
Most Barbour jackets were created with the English weather in mind so if you live somewhere like the pacific northwest that gets significant rainfall this jacket is perfect. The beauty of the 6oz skyloi is that it works in warmer weather as well. We can easily recommend this Jacket from Fall to Spring.
We value elite functionality with Style. This jacket has the rare benefit of being both highly rain resistant and formal enough to wear over a formal suit.
The Verdict: This is a cross between James Bond and Indiana Jones. It stands up to weather. Its perfect for travel or any kind of adventure you might find yourself in yet still available to use at a formal dinner party. The price tag can be high (about 400.00 depending on where you find it) but this jacket is an investment that can last decades if you take care of it.
